Understand How WellFunded Works

WellFunded is a connection tool that helps Canadian charities get discovered by major donors, foundations, and donor-advised funds.

This article explains what WellFunded is, how it works, and which tools you may encounter as donors engage with your organization.

What WellFunded Is

WellFunded is a platform that helps donors discover and evaluate charities.

It allows you to:

  • A platform that connects you with donors interested in your cause

  • A way to showcase your organization and funding needs

  • A due diligence tool that makes it easier for donors to say "yes"

What WellFunded Is Not

  • A transaction platform (we don't process donations)

  • A fee-based service for charities (completely free for charities to use)

How WellFunded Works

Step 1: Create Your Charity Profile

Your charity profile is how donors discover and review your organization.

Your profile includes:

  • Mission and program overview

  • Leadership and board information

  • CRA-imported financial data

  • Impact areas and geographic focus

  • Accreditations and discovery tags

  • Optional supporting materials, such as reports or images

Your profile can be viewed by donors, foundations, and DAF sponsors during search and review.

This is the most important step.

Step 2: Add Projects (Optional)

Projects allow you to describe specific funding needs or initiatives.

You can add one or more projects to:

  • Share what funding would support this year

  • Provide context donors often ask for

  • Clarify timelines, scope, and funding amounts

If you do not add projects, donors may still express interest and request more information later.

Tools That You’ll Use

WellCheck

WellCheck is a standardized due diligence process used during major gift or grant consideration.

When WellCheck is used:

  1. A donor requests a WellCheck for your organization

  2. You receive an email notification

  3. You complete a structured assessment of ~40 questions

  4. Our AI analyzes your responses alongside CRA data and sector benchmarks

  5. A WellFunded team member reviews everything

  6. A summary is generated for both you and the donor

Completing a WellCheck is optional unless requested by a donor.

WellConnect

WellConnect is used when donors create targeted giving opportunities.

When this happens:

  • Eligible charities receive an email notification

  • You may submit your existing profile with additional context

  • No duplicate applications are required

Key Things to Know

  • The platform is free for charities. Donors and partners access WellFunded through a subscription.

  • WellFunded is designed to support organizations of all sizes.

  • Email notifications alert you when action is needed, so you do not need to check the platform regularly.

  • You remain in control of all relationships with donors. WellFunded only facilitates discovery and introductions.

  • Most profile fields are optional, with the exception of your organization name.

Getting Started Checklist

To get started on WellFunded:

  • Create your charity profile

  • Review your impact areas and tags

  • Upload supporting documents if available

  • Add projects if relevant

  • Wait for donor interest or requests
