How WellFunded Works With Charities to Build Your Report

What happens behind the scenes when you request a WellCheck — and what it means for your giving decision.

We reach out to every charity before publishing

When you request a WellCheck, we don't just run the report and send it. We contact the charity first.

We reach out using verified contact information and make up to three attempts over approximately three weeks. We track delivery where possible to confirm our outreach is landing. This window exists because charities that engage with the process produce better, more complete reports — and better reports serve you.

Why charity participation matters

A WellCheck built with the charity's involvement draws from a richer set of materials: audited financials, annual reports, strategic plans, theories of change, and direct responses to our standardized assessment questions.

That depth translates directly into the quality of what you read. More materials means more findings, more context, and a more accurate picture of the organization.

What happens when a charity doesn't respond

Some charities don't respond to our outreach. When that happens — after three attempts over three weeks — we proceed anyway.

We complete the WellCheck using publicly available and independently verifiable sources: CRA filings, publicly accessible annual reports, and any other documentation we can substantiate. You receive your report.

It will also note, clearly, that the charity was unresponsive during the assessment process.

We flag this because it's relevant. A significant giving decision deserves full context — including whether the organization chose to engage when given the opportunity.

What non-responsiveness means — and what it doesn't

Non-responsiveness isn't automatically disqualifying. Some charities are under-resourced. Some simply missed our outreach. It's one data point among many.

What it does mean is that the report you're reading reflects what we could find and verify independently — not what the organization chose to share. That's a meaningful distinction when you're considering a significant gift.
